US Sales Tax Rates: Location data

Last updated: September 27, 2026

This page explains how US Sales Tax Rates handles store locations a paid customer uploads on ussalestaxrates.com. It covers those location files. The main privacy policy is at /privacy.

What we collect

  • The Store/Location ID you put in the file.
  • The address text you put in the file, including street, city, state, and ZIP when you include them.
  • The city, state, and ZIP we normalize from those fields.
  • The jurisdiction match, or the Needs review reason, produced from your file.
  • Which paid plan the file is stored with.

How we use it

  • To show which uploaded locations sit in a jurisdiction that has an in-force rate change or an upcoming rate change on your plan.
  • We do not use the file to determine tax, nexus, filing, or what you should charge.
  • We do not sell the file.

How we store it

The rows are stored in the same database as your account, watchlist, and paid plan. The storage key is the checkout session id on that plan. A customer can read the rows only while signed in to the account that holds that plan. The operator unlock used to review the product stores rows on that unlock plan. That browser is not a customer account. The company that hosts the site’s database stores the file so the product can read it.

Retention

Rows stay until you delete them or replace them. There is no automatic expiry. Uploading a new file replaces the stored rows, and the previous addresses are removed as part of that replacement. Delete locations replaces the stored list with an empty list. The address rows are removed. An empty record can remain under that checkout key until you upload again. The upload is retained until you delete it or replace it.

Deletion

The locations page has Delete locations. That control is available while the paid plan is open in the browser, including a signed-in customer and the operator unlock used to review the product.

Account association

A customer file is tied to the paid plan on the signed-in account. It is not kept only in the browser. Another account cannot read it.

How a jurisdiction is chosen

We do not send your address to a geocoding service. A ZIP is turned into a county only when the Census Bureau 2020 ZIP Code Tabulation Area file shipped with this site places that ZIP entirely inside one county. A ZIP that crosses a county line is not given a county. The jurisdiction name and any rate change come from the enrolled monitor, which is built from official state charts. If more than one jurisdiction fits, or the address is incomplete, the row stays Needs review. We do not pick one.
